Low Cost High Performance hard disk unit for ST family of computers - Page 1

Low cost Hard Disk interface compatible with Atari ST family computers,
firmware is refined compared to original one;
and tested on a 520ST TOS 1.04, 1040STFM TOS 1.04, 1040STE TOS 1.06, 1040STE TOS 1.62 and 1040STE with TOS 2.06; with ok results.


Results: The ACSI2STM works perfectly; such example loading the 3.5 MB size of current Metal Slug port takes around 12 seconds (aprox. 650 KB/s read and 400 KB/s write).
Tested against old SD cards, such 1 GB card; 4 GB SDHC and 8 GB SDHC. All these are detected and works correctly!

Writing and reading from the hard disk interface:

On the last video, a game running from hard disk is shown; with "/" key, a savestate is created. After successful hard disk file writing, the game is closed pressing "*" key, and the STE system returns to desktop. A copy of the generated GS00.TOS file is created, renaming it to GS01.TOS; finally the game is resumed loading the copy of the savestate, GS01.TOS . All these operations are performed correctly.

J'en ai un et je m'en sers tous les jours sur mon Mega STE sur lequel je code.
Cela fonctionne très bien.
Un petit soucis quand même : parfois l'Atari me dit que le disque n'es pas pret ou qu'il ne trouve pas le chemin au fichier demandé.
Je recommence l'opération et c'est bon...

Je viens à l'AC avec mon MEGA STE.

There is a side effect on selling as a kit;

Each piece: PCB, STM32 board and SD card board is tested separately prior to create a hard disk unit; as well tested when they compose a hard disk, and sometimes a failure arise; such a bad soldered STM32 pin (in the micro itself), a non usable SD card module (one to discard)...


Personally I prefer to sell entire working and tested units;
if you desire, due to (I suppose) you are in France, you can send a standard letter with the DA19 connector (I am in Spain, standard letter cost will be reduced); and I place it in your unit.

Yes indeed, I bought a NOS from a local electronic supplier few years ago which had plenty of DA19 and DB23 connectors (male, female and enclosure) bought from a competitor's closure. It was a good find at the time, and now a bit less since DB23 are readily available again.

On trouve des images disques toutes faites de mémoire avec les jeux convertis pour être exécutés depuis un disque dur (enfin, je crois que c'est ce que j'ai fait), de sur le site de PPera entre autres.

Comme celle-ci par exemple:

Je ne sais plus si c'est celle que j'ai utilisé, mais je viens de vérifier la carte SD sur le PC, elle est lisible, donc ça facilite le transfert de fichiers (en respectant le nommage 8.3 pour plus de sécurité)

Your question is the easier part... The best way is to use one of the ready to use SD card images, or use the image I provide with the postage tracking number message.

These deployed SD card images are compatible with the ST/E and PC computer at once making file transfer easy

Don't think it too much, there isn't a high performance hard disk unit like this at this very low cost

As well there is a partitioner software from Peter Putnik, in order to create your own disk partitions, but for general usage the ready to use disk images are more than enough

Moi c'est pareil. Je suis hésitant à me commander l'interface. Mais par rapport à autre souci. J'ai pris il y a quelques années l'interface IDE et j'avais commandé en même temps un Tos 2.06 pour nappe twist pour ne pas avoir à booter via disquette. Donc déjà je sais pas si c'est compatible. Sinon retour au Tos d'origine (avec son souci de sauvegarde du bureau) de ma mon 520 Ste. Et pareil que toi pour les partitions. Avec l'interface IDE je me suis retrouvé avec la carte CF partitionnée mais la carte s'est envoyée en l'air. Je me suis retrouvé comme un imbécile. Ce que je veux c'est un truc que je peux bricoler et reconstituer moi même en cas de soucis. Donc re-partitionner la carte entre autre.

Vous allez me demander pourquoi je veux pas garder la carte IDE. En fait ça n'a jamais bien fonctionné sur mon Ste et la carte sort du socket sans arrêt. A force de a rerentrer mon Ste s'est mis à plus démarrer du tout. J'ai du vérifier toutes les pins du socket et détordre pour retrouver un boot du St sans l'interface. Depuis je sais pas si c'est l'interface qui n'est plus bien branchée ou la CF pas reconnue. De plus mon St est tout le temps ouvert comme si il était en chantier.

Bref un truc qui se branche direct sans risque de tordre mon socket, c'est une bonne solution pour moi.

This hard disk unit works well under TOS 2.06 ; there are at least 40 or 50 users with this TOS version using the low cost hard disk device
As well, its pretty straigthforward and plug&play device.

Does it work on all STe whatever the DMA chip on them?

There are users with Bad DMA using the device, as well writing at disk without corruption.

But, if you have a bad DMA equipped STE, you need 2 or 4 MB (better) RAM and use a hard disk image that loads EmuTOS entirely into RAM.


The problem with these computers comes from the fact that Atari ST/E computer constantly power on and off the TOS ROM chips,
that causes a lot of electromagnetic (EMC) noise.

When the TOS ROM chips are not used, due to you loaded entirely the TOS in RAM (this takes 256 KB of RAM),
this EMC noise is not present, and the disk is not corrupted at writing.

This procedure is discovered by user Stormy at Atari Forum,

You only need a micro SD card; this device lets use any micro SD card as a compatible hard disk for your STE machine; as well the micro SD card is also readable under Windows / Linux.
(You can use your PC to copy / read content to the SD card, an use the copied content in your Atari STE)

I just had a better look, it is basically the same bluepill based project as the BlueSCSI for the Macintosh (with changes specifically for the STe of course)

In theory no because the SD is not managed by the computer, but the board, and the bluepill on the device should be able to handle most SD card size. It's more about, is it worth to put a 512GB SD card in such a device?
